Insight Into North Korea

8/1/2017

Since we hear about North Korea pretty much nightly for various reasons including updates on their military capabilities, I decided to write about their country.

They’ve had a crazy history with Japan occupying the country from 1910 – 1945. After WWII the Korean peninsula was divided in two and Russia controlled the upper half while the U.S. controlled the southern portion. If it weren’t for Russia getting involved, all of Korea would probably be a democratic country now.

The U.S. had no intent of empire building and instead helped the South Koreans build a government and infrastructure to where they’d be okay on their own. Russia gave up on the notion of adding North Korea to their empire for several reasons one is that they had already lost millions on the battlefield and had so much to do to get their country up and running again. But Russia did influence the creation of a communist government with the leader of a Korean guerilla militia their first dictator.

Their population is around 25 million and they only have a GDP of $32B which means that an average citizen in North Korea produces $1,280 of revenue (goods and services output), compared to a U.S. citizen who produces over $57,467 which ranks us at 9th in the world. Although we don’t get credit for it, we are by far a more productive country in generating an economy than any other member in the G8 even though many liberals think we should be like these other countries.

Democrats often bring up that we spend more on the military than any other country in the world but this is misleading since we are so much larger than most other countries; not unusual for them to spin this topic. There are many countries that spend more of their GDP than we do; for example, we spend a little over 3% of our GDP on military spending whereas North Korea spends over 30%. This is comparable spending to what Russia did during the Cold War and it ended up taking down their economy and destroying their military.

One of the reasons our military budget is so high is that we’re the ones who typically pick up the tab when it comes to joint military operations like with the U.N. This is something Trump is fighting and is demanding other countries pay their fair share. This is the primary reason Trump isn’t liked around the world as much as President Obama was, which I’m perfectly fine with but the mainstream media tries to make it an issue.

North Korea primarily does business with China (90% of their trade), along with Pakistan and Russia. They don’t have too much to offer as a majority of their exports are in charcoal briquettes and iron ore whereas they need to import a lot of products like oil, rice, wheat, and various technologies such as phones.

As you can imagine this can lead to trade deficits with China which is why North Korea has a credit line with the Bank of China. Should China become concerned that they won’t get their money back then North Korea would be in a lot of trouble as severe food shortages would abound and a leader who cannot provide for the basic needs of his or her people will no longer be the leader.

I don’t think there’s a country in the world quite like North Korea. From a humanitarian perspective they are deplorable. Businesses are state run and the way they get their laborers is to arrest people for simple things like not clapping enthusiastically enough when their leader Kim Jung-un is giving a speech. There’s a constant stream of people who go through a kangaroo court where they don’t get to say anything and then they’re sent to where they’re needed. This isn’t unlike Otto Warmbier who was sent to perform hard labor in a North Korean owned business.

It’s absolutely shocking to compare South Korea to North Korea as places like Seoul, South Korea are pretty much like being in New York City. South Korea is loaded with a variety of industries including high tech and they are one of the greatest places to get any kind of mineral. If you buy a LG or Samsung product it’s made there and of course they manufacture Hyundai vehicles.

They’re a tremendous success story of capitalism and democracy and their citizens are benefiting from it greatly.  I saw a satellite image one time of both North and South Korea at night and the North was almost dark while South Korea was lit up with activity. The fact is, North Korea can’t afford to keep their lights on.

My wife lived in South Korea while her father, Major General Thomas Upton Greer, was on the negotiation team in dealing with North Korea. He told me that North Korea loved to play mind games like calling meetings last minute on Christmas Day or Eve and that they’d constantly saber rattle in order to get economic help from other countries.

For a country that shrouds itself in secrecy why do they constantly show video footage of their military and weapons? It’s like a little dog yapping hoping to sound vicious enough so a big dog won’t attack it. We know we wouldn’t attack North Korea and try to take their country but the citizens there are taught to hate western countries especially the U.S., so they believe we might.

In order for them to relax their display of military might they always ask for humanitarian assistance including food and medicine. The more of a scare they can put into everyone, the more stuff they’ll get. This isn’t a long-term fix and it requires them to go to the well time and time again to get countries to help them.

If they can convince the world they have a successful nuclear weapons program, they know they’ll have tremendous leverage in negotiating for things they need to survive. It’s sad because it wouldn’t take much for them to become a friend to the rest of the world and they’d grow their economy tremendously.

Not much is known about North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un because when his father was the leader, he wasn’t seen in public much. When his father passed away in 2012 he became the leader at the age of 28. He received a degree at one of their universities in physics and he attended their military academy. He has a wife and daughter but they’re rarely seen.

Because news is sketchy coming from North Korea it’s hard to tell how much is true but apparently Kim Jong-un is a paranoid masochist. He killed his uncle and purged the rest of his uncle’s family including children. All it takes is for someone to whisper in his ear that someone doesn’t respect him as a leader and the person is executed; not unlike royal families during mid-evil times.

In wrapping up, I feel so sorry for the citizens of North Korea and I feel so blessed to be born in the United States where I’ve been able to forge my own destiny. If you pray, remember them and ask that freedom ring.

The Sound of Silence

8/1/2017

This is one of my favorite songs by Simon & Garfunkel and it’s one of the first songs I learned to play on guitar. Have you ever thought about what the song means? It has some interesting lyrics including: 1) “The signs of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls” 2) “The people bowed and prayed, to the neon God they made” and 3) “Silence like a cancer grows.”

People have different ideas about what the song means but to me it’s about the social movement of the 60’s. That people were worshipping the “things” of the world (neon gods), while people (prophets), were forewarning the dangers of doing this and the social problems that were being neglected; the prophets being street artists because they often address social causes in their murals. Lastly, that silence is like a cancer. That people often don’t speak up unless it’s a cause that affects them and that eventually the cancer will spread and impact them and it could be too late.

Anyhow, some people have different ideas about the song but the above makes the most sense to me. Regardless, the lyrics and music are amazing and of course the perfectly blended voices of Simon & Garfunkel make it better still.

Transgenderism in the Military

8/1/2017

For the transgender community to be a fraction of a percent of our society (.2%), and a fraction of those (.4%), serving in the military (3,000 out of 1,300,000 military personnel), Democrats and the mainstream media have become like rabid dogs over such a minor issue but this is their M.O. in trying to divide our country. I’m more concerned about issues like Medicaid and Social Security going bust because it impacts our entire country in one way or another. I wish they’d get all cranked up over these real problems.

I don’t see where it makes sense for the military to take on people with Gender Identity Disorder who haven't transitioned yet but I leave it up to the military experts who know whether someone would help or hurt our military readiness. There are a few thousand people serving in the military who are transgender and they might be doing a great job so in no way would I want them removed. I don't know what they told the recruiter but every recruit must pass mental and physical exams in order to serve so this can be an issue for the transgender community which I'll explain in a moment .

What would very much concern me if I were a military recruiter is the fact that over 40% of those in the transgender community commit suicide. This is a tragedy but I can certainly understand why this might happen. With this in mind, a recruiter is supposed to screen candidates and I’d be very worried about bringing someone on board who could be a danger to themselves or others based on the type of occupations there are in the military.

I find it absolutely ridiculous that the mental health community is playing the political correctness card when it comes to transgenders serving in the military. By the very definition of what constitutes a mental disorder, transgenderism applies because it’s a mental state which causes an extreme amount of duress; it’s even called a Gender Identity Disorder (GID), in the psychiatric community.

People who are transgender experience a tremendous amount of duress and stress over their terrible situation as seen by their astronomical suicide rates. There are certainly service men and women who suffer from bi-polar, depression, and PTSD, but they wouldn’t have been recruited if these things were known up front. Why the exception for Gender Identity Disorder if a recruiter is made aware of it?

The military also attempts to recruit people who are physically healthy to limit medical costs as the military budget is tight. This is primarily why you have to be less than 35 years of age to join the military even though there are a lot of people in their 40’s and 50’s who are in great shape. With age comes health problems and the military doesn’t want to have to spend a lot of money on medications and surgeries. People who are transgender not only need medication for mental and physical needs such as hormone therapy which runs around $1,200 a month, but they also are required to receive professional counseling in Gender Identity Disorder because of the critical personal choices they must make.

I’ve brought up the issue in a previous post but in no way do I think the military should pay for any aspect of transgender surgery which in recent estimates is $132,000. This is the equivalent of five years of military pay for an enlisted soldier.

Paying for transgender surgery would be an extremely huge incentive for people who want to transition to join the military. This would be a more expensive benefit than offering to pay veterans to get a four year college degree after they leave service. At least the money taxpayers would spend on a college degree would provide some return on investment; what’s the return in paying for someone to change their gender identity? Absolutely nothing.

I realize that in the scheme of things we’re probably not talking about a massive amount of costs because I don’t see people who are transgender flooding into the military but it’s still wrong and liberals shouldn’t be able to PC their way out of this one. Why take on any additional costs that aren’t warranted; the government waste enough money as it is.

Even the Rand Report regarding this issue that was research sanctioned by the Obama Administration said that: "Transgenderism in the military would cause minimal impact on cost and military readiness." Notice it didn't say no impact. What is the benefit of taking on any negative impact at all regardless of how minimal (a relative word), the report said it would be? Keep in mind, this was an Obama Administration report so "minimal impact" to them might mean something entirely different to our military.

The military doesn’t need to bring people in who won’t be dependable. An average person who goes through a gender transition is disabled for approximately 238 days total. I’m not sure I was ever out sick when I served but if I would’ve become ill, my fellow sailors would have had to work double and triple shifts to help cover for me. For someone to be able to go out to receive transgender surgery and not be available to serve, is a military readiness issue. People being out can be dangerous to a military unit because of the impact of sleep deprivation in very dangerous jobs. I promise you that someone taken off of the duty roster isn’t received well and negatively impacts a unit’s morale.

Like I wrote earlier, I don't have a problem at all with people from the transgender community serving in our military if military experts believe they can do a great job, they don't costs more than any other person serving in the military, and they won't be out excessively on medical leave.

No group in the military whether gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, etc., should be treated any differently than another group which I'm afraid is what the transgender community is pushing for in this case; but I could be wrong. If they want the military to pay for any aspect of their gender transition and need way more time off than other people serving in the military, then they are asking for special treatment and this is wrong.

I’m shocked that this issue has become such a hot button topic considering all the other extremely important issues that are happening here and around the world. Liberals have once again focused on the far left while leaving the average American’s major issues behind. You’d think they would’ve learned a few lessons from the last election but they clearly haven’t.

What Makes You Happy?

8/1/2017

I’d say in most cases if you asked people what they want out of life, they’d say they want to be happy and successful. I also believe that if you asked most people what would make them happy, they’d stumble over the question a bit. How can someone achieve the life goal of being happy when they don’t know what it is?

When I gave seminars on how to make it a great life I’d cover this topic and I’d ask everyone that when they went home to make the time to sit down in a quiet place with a pen and pad, and think about this question. There’s a secret to happiness and that secret is to know what makes you happy and then make it happen.

For me it’s pretty simple as the things that make me happy include going to the beach, listening to music (mostly 70’s rock and country), reading, watching television, watching movies, researching/writing for my blog and working on my book project. Knowing this, I have to make sure I do them. I go to the beach pretty often. I listen to music when I’m out walking or sitting on the beach. I always have a book to read. I watch television during primetime and I go to the movies about once a month. Lastly, when I’m not doing the other things I’ve listed or taking care of errands or chores, I’m busy writing.

Besides the articles for my blog I have two volumes of books I’m working on with each volume containing information on 50 famous people (i.e. Alexander the Great, Ernest Hemmingway, Joan of Arc, Ted Bundy, Thomas Jefferson, etc.). Needless to say, I’m not running out of things to write about and I absolutely love researching and writing.

Like I said my list of things that make me happy isn’t that complicated but some people might have more challenging things to pursue like possibly travelling which costs money. But if that’s the case then they need to figure out how much money they can spend and then back into where they can go. Maybe a trip to Italy is out of the question financially but what about a trip to Napa and Sonoma valleys in California? A lot of those areas look a lot like Tuscany.

Sometimes it isn’t where you go so much as it is to get out of your home where there are constant reminders of things you need to get done. Happiness surely includes getting away from the daily grind. But the bottom line is if travelling is one of the greatest things that make you happy then you have to plan for it and allocate the time. No one is out there trying to figure out ways for you to have a happy life, it’s up to you.

So the great secret to happiness is this: know what makes you happy then bring those things into your life. Do you know those things that make you happy? As you are well aware, time flies so if you have never sat down to figure this out and/or you aren’t making the time to do the things that make you happy, then it’s time to get started.

A Living Wage

8/1/2017

There’s a big push from Democrats to increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Their big complaint is that the minimum wage isn’t a living wage meaning people can’t work in a job that pays less than $15 an hour and stay afloat. I admit I’m going to go off the tracks a little bit on illegal immigration’s impact on wages but hang in there because I’m trying to drive home some extremely important points that negate Democrats’ talking points.

My biggest question is when did entry level jobs become a way to make a living? When I entered the job market I worked for minimum wage and I knew if I wanted to make more money I needed to learn a trade or go to college and receive an education that would help me get a better job. I chose to join the military to get some experience and then attended college when I finished my tour; it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The bottom line is that a minimum wage isn’t supposed to be a living wage, it never was.

In areas where the “living wage” has been tested (like Seattle), many employees ended up making less money because their employers reduced their hours so they could maintain their profit margins. Some small businesses cut back on workers and/or stopped hiring in order to stay in business.

In many cases a company’s payroll is the most expensive part of operating their business and raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour is more than a 100% increase from the current rate so of course employers will cut back. Unfortunately, reducing the number of employees negatively affects service for customers which in turn could lead to losing business. There’s always the option of raising prices but this could hurt sales and the bottom line is as prices go up in the marketplace, the increased hourly wage employees get won’t go as far.

I find it interesting that the same people who protest and riot over getting $15 an hour are often the same people fighting for immigration and sanctuary cities.  They just don’t get that allowing a large amount of illegal immigrants into our country doesn’t increase wages it decreases them. Many of these illegal immigrants would gladly work for less than $15 an hour and employers would gladly hire them.

I have absolutely no problem with bringing in legal immigrants with special skill sets that U.S. companies need and are having a difficult time filling. I have a Canadian friend who has a Work Visa because of his expertise in the energy industry. There weren’t enough job candidates in the U.S. with his amazing skill sets but this isn’t the case with most immigrants. A huge percentage of illegal immigrants aren’t college educated nor possess high-end skills sets. How many Hispanic computer programmers cross the border?

My Canadian friend went through the legal immigration process and has been paying a lot in taxes thus contributing to our economy. It makes absolutely no sense to promote immigrating poor people from other countries. Liberals will tank our economy with their ideology just like what’s happening with other countries around the world that have bankrupted themselves by allowing the masses to vote themselves “free stuff.” I place most of the blame on the Democrats who use this mentality to get elected. What we really need is for both parties to tell voters the truth; we’re broke and we all need to start making sacrifices to prevent an economic collapse.

Keep in mind that none of these illegal immigrants being paid under the table are paying income or payroll taxes so they contribute nothing towards tax revenues. So they’re receiving benefits from our government like free schooling for their children but aren’t paying anything towards the costs. You don’t have to be an economics professor to figure out that this isn’t a good economic model.

Sure they spend some money here so they pay sales taxes for goods and services but this is a fraction of what American citizens pay and the money we earn stays here whereas a lot of illegal immigrants send money home which means the money completely leaves our economy. This has the same horrendous economic impact that a trade deficit has on an economy as it lowers a country’s GDP which means the amount of money that goes round and round allowing everyone a chance to get a part of it continues to decline.
One last point to dispel one of the liberals main selling points about allowing illegal immigrants into our country and that is they say they’ll do work none of us are willing to do such as working in agriculture. They say that costs would go up dramatically for things like produce if these workers weren’t willing to do the work. Isn’t this a comparable mentality to slave owners keeping the costs down for Americans on goods by using slaves?

What would happen to produce prices if the workers were paid $15 an hour and had to along with their employers, pay payroll taxes? Prices would go up dramatically thus negating the advantage of the new “living wage.” Either Democrats don’t get this economic concept or they don’t care and are just lying to pander for votes.

By the way, I heard a liberal talking about the above issues and he was at a complete loss when it came to defending his position. He was one of the leaders in the movement and couldn’t deny that his pro-immigration stance and the living wage pursuit might be mutually exclusive. He was asked since he was so for immigration and how great it is for our country, how many immigrants we should let in? The interviewer asked the protestor should we allow everyone in who wants to come here since they are so great for our country.

He was obviously shell shocked by the questions and fumbled around for an answer and eventually said he’ll leave it up to economists to figure it out. If one of the leaders of the movement can’t answer these questions then what are these protestors protesting for? They are taught to hate America for being morally corrupt but don’t have a clue what they’re talking about. Republicans don’t hate illegal immigrants who have a dream for better things for themselves and their children they hate the negative impact they have on the citizens of our country because we can’t afford to save the world even though I know we’d all like to.

Hopefully you can see what I’m getting at and that is Democrats fighting for increased wages while pushing for relaxed immigration standards is completely ridiculous and they can’t successfully debate the point. Plus as I mentioned, minimum wage was never meant to be a living wage. Forcing employers to increase their payrolls such a large amount can only lead to fewer jobs, higher prices, and/or reduced employee hours. Once again, this is Economics 101.

The King Cobra

8/1/2017

Although snakes certainly freak a lot of people out the fact is almost all of them are afraid of humans and will attempt to slither away. When people do get bitten it’s generally when they step on a snake or right next to one and it like any other creature strikes out because it’s afraid.

I lived in the mountains of southern California for a while and I’d see rattle snakes all the time and they didn’t want anything to do with me and would either try to get away or make sure I knew where it was (shaking its rattle), so I’d walk around it.

There are hundreds of varieties of cobras but the most vicious is the King Cobra which has been recorded to be as long as 20 feet. Generally you need to stay at least five yards away from a King Cobra or you could be bitten. It’s not that its venom is so much more dangerous than other snakes but it has a lot of it and when it bites into something it injects a huge amount, enough to take down an elephant; maybe not kill it but take it out of commission for several hours.

The King Cobra isn’t known for running away but will instead rise up and if you don’t leave quickly, you might get bitten and die very fast. Snake charmers don’t typically work with King Cobras and the ones they do use often have their fangs and venom pockets removed; this is why they can get bitten so many times and still live.

The King Cobra is a venomous snake but not a poisonous one (same as rattlesnakes), which means it can be eaten. If a snake is in fact poisonous then it can be deadly to eat any part of its body or at the very least get extremely sick. By the way, I’ve eaten rattlesnake and it taste like chicken.  :)

The Impact of Hillary's Loss on Women

8/1/2017

I’ve mentioned some of this before but since I heard a few ladies talking about the terrible impact that Hillary Clinton not winning the election had on women I just had to write something.

There’s no doubt we’ll have a female President someday when the right woman comes along; Hillary wasn’t her. She didn’t lose because she was a woman she lost because she’s Hillary Clinton. She lost because of the Benghazi scandal. She lost because of the email scandal. She lost because of the DNC scandal. She lost because she was caught in so many lies. Too many people didn’t see her as being a great role model for young girls and women. The fact that she lost to Donald Trump is a testament to how atrocious she was as a candidate for the Democrat Party.

So how earth shattering has Hillary not winning the election been on the lives of women? I’ve not heard of any women’s rights going away since Trump took office. I realize Trump has plenty of scandals going and who knows he might get impeached but Hillary would’ve been inundated with them and just how bad would it have been for women if the first female President was impeached? The risk was too high with her.

What exactly would’ve happened with women’s rights should Hillary have become elected? The marchers held up signs about their being a pay gap between men and women but what would Hillary have done to fix it? Not only did I not hear Hillary present a plan I also didn’t hear the marchers providing ideas on how to constitutionally and realistically, change any pay disparities.

There are common sense reasons for gender pay gaps and it has nothing to do with white men oppressing women. Women historically have taken on jobs that paid less because they were the ones who took care of the children and managed the home so they couldn’t do long work weeks or put in crazy hours. So of course if you add up the number of women and the money they make compared to men there will be a discrepancy. There isn’t unbiased, statistically viable data, which shows that a man and a woman with the same education and job experiences consistently possess pay gaps. I’m not saying this didn’t happen decades ago but it certainly isn’t common now just like a lot of other social issues.

There’s absolutely no reason why a quality employer would want to pay a woman less than a man. If a company wants to hire and keep the best people they need to pay for it. If a woman chooses to accept a lower salary than she expects then that’s on her because in America we don’t force someone to take or stay in a job.

There’s a shift taking place to where more women than men are graduating with post high school degrees (i.e. associates, bachelors, doctorate, engineering, masters, medical, etc.). This fall, women will have slightly more participants than men in law schools. All of the above means that women will soon have higher incomes than men because of the high-skilled jobs they’ll have especially since the high school dropout rate for boys is increasing while it’s not for girls.

When this happens, will men start protesting about income inequality or will we recognize it for what it is and put the time and effort into making ourselves more valuable to the marketplace so we can reach women’s income levels? Basically will we do the right thing and not use the same tactics as the women’s movement who play victim when there are legitimate reasons for the current pay gaps?

The market should dictate wealth distribution because in the end it’s the best way to reward people for what they put into it (i.e. getting a good education, making good life decisions, working hard, being loyal, etc.). If the government gets involved in some way (I don’t know how), to force companies to make adjustments to payroll based on gender, we might as well change to communism or socialism and have businesses run by the government. Take a look at how great that’s going in Central and South America; corruption is through the roof and businesses are failing.

The Women’s Rights Movement did their best to get Hillary elected but it didn’t work. They did everything they could to make it appear they were victims of the system and electing a woman would make things better but it was a false narrative. Things were already getting better for women on their own because they’re completely capable of doing great things and they’re doing it.

Lastly, for the Women’s Rights Movement to constantly bring up Roe vs. Wade is ridiculous. They used it as a scare tactic during the campaign making it sound as if it will be overturned should a Republican get in office. It won’t be overturned no matter who’s in office because it was a sound decision by the Supreme Court.

About the only real question the majority worries about is the question of when does life begin? When is it wrong to take a baby because it’s a viable life? My thought is that if life ends when the heart stops beating it should begin when it starts beating but regardless if the child puts a woman’s life in danger she has every right to make the choice about whether or not to have the baby. A majority of Republican voters acknowledge this, yet liberal Democrats keep playing the anti-woman card against the Republican Party. It gets old. I’ve said it before but why in the world would the Republican Party having millions of women in it if the Party was against women?  It’s ridiculous.

So I ask once again, what difference was Hillary going to make towards women’s rights? Why would her not getting elected set the movement back? There’s no doubt that when the right female candidate comes along (it won’t be Elizabeth Warren), with the right messages for the times, she’ll have absolutely no problem getting elected. Hopefully it will be someone of good character who everyone especially young girls and women can truly look up to; Hillary clearly wasn’t the one.
