3D Technology

1/27/2024

Movies that are expected to be large box office hits often come with a 3D version of the movie especially if it’s an action adventure. I find it kind of funny that young people think 3D technology is new when the 1950’s were considered the 3D decade. I’m sure you can envision pictures you’ve seen of movie audiences in the 50’s wearing those funny looking 3D glasses.

Movie studios back in the 1950’s who were filming 3D movies didn’t have the amazing technology that’s available today. They were restricted to what they could do with the actual film tape whereas today they use digital film and computers to create the 3D effect. Most of the 3D affect back then was due directly to the glasses the audience wore which pulled the screen closer to them as if they were wearing binoculars.

Today movie studios can use technology which allows them to take the same scene and put a couple of layers of the same scene on top of it. So, when someone wears 3D glasses it has a rich depth to it where it looks completely natural. It also makes images appear within our grasps which is closer than audiences were able to see it in the 50's.

What most people don’t know is the first 3D movie was The Power of Love and it was produced in 1922. It took close to thirty years to get the idea of 3D movies to take off. Ever since the 50’s the popularity of 3D movies has come and gone.

Just in case you didn’t know the three dimensions (3D), are height, width, and depth. I’m not a huge art fan but the artists who paint are experts at the use of 3D. Think about how amazing it is for them to take a flat canvas and layer dimensions on it to where you and I can tell which objects are closer or further away. So even though artists for thousands of years didn’t call what they did three dimensional they were making it happen, nevertheless. Their goal was to create a painting that looked real, so 3D was a necessary aspect of it.

Scientists believe there are many more dimensions beyond the three you and I know. We are born with 3D vision (a.k.a. binocular vision) for our protection. Binocular vision allows us to determine which objects are closer to us. If we didn’t have depth perception we’d fall all over the place, and we certainly couldn’t drive.

A good example of the need for depth perception is in playing catch with a baseball. We must be able to see a baseball coming towards us (not just how wide and tall the baseball is) but the depth/distance as well. The speed at which the baseball is travelling is a fourth dimension according to scientist. The baseball travelling towards us is an example of horizontal speed so knowing the rate of something going up or something falling are also considered dimensions. We might not understand all of these dimensions, but they still exist.

Young people like to believe they’re on the cutting edge of everything and that we don’t have a clue. I guess we shouldn’t tell them that 3D has been around since the beginning of time and that mankind has been applying it through art for thousands of years. I guess we shouldn’t tell them the first film made for 3D viewing was in 1922 and that movie theaters were showing a lot of 3D movies in the 1950’s. Then again, maybe we should tell these young whipper snappers! :)

The Eagles

1/27/2024

There are plenty of books, movies, and television shows that cover this amazing singing group so my article won’t due them justice, but I will cover some highlights that I think you’ll find interesting.

First of all, they are still the highest selling band in U.S. history. Their greatest hits album from 1971 – 1975, became the number one selling album in the 20th century. They constantly put out hit songs like: Desperado, Evil Woman, Heartache Tonight, Hotel California, I Can’t Tell You Why, Lying Eyes, New Kid in Town, Peaceful Easy Feeling, Witchy Woman, Tequila Sunrise, etc. They performed many tours where they had large venues with sold-out crowds.

The Eagles were blessed with some of the greatest musicians, singers, and songwriters of all time including Don Henley, Glenn Frye, and Joe Walsh, all of which have made it into various Halls of Fame. Henley and Frye were members of Linda Ronstadt’s band before leaving on their own to start a group. Instead of her being bitter, she respected them enough to where she helped them get started.

I believe the reasons they were so successful had to do with four things: 1) They had several band members who could write great songs. 2) Several band members could sing lead which gave the band different sounds, so it wasn't monotonous to listen to them (i.e. New Kid in Town, Hotel California, Life's Been Good to Me). All of these hit songs were sung by different members in the band. 3) Joe Walsh. Not only could he sing and play a variety of instruments (he's mind blowing on electric guitar), his facial expressions and antics on stage while performing are mesmerizing. 4) The group's harmonies were almost as rare as The Beach Boys.

What I find so interesting about the success of the group is that when they were trying to break into the business, they had a major challenge with record producers because although they loved the band’s sound, they didn’t have a clue whether there was an audience for their new style of music which was soft rock. At the time classic rock groups were hot like Aerosmith, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Who, etc.

Asylum Records was a new company at the same time the Eagles came together (1971), and they took a chance and signed them which ended up being a phenomenal move on their part. Bob Dylan and Linda Ronstadt also joined Asylum Records around the same time and their record sales went through the roof with all of these great artists. It was the best record label launch in the history of the business.

There are several stories about where the band’s name came from but the most common is that some of the band members (they didn’t have a name yet), went to the desert and got high on Peyote. A large Eagle swept down towards them and one of the guys yelled: Eagle! The name stuck.

They're such an awesome band with a sound like no other. I think it’s fantastic that after 40 years of them producing their music that I still listen to the group all the time on my IPod. I guess their legacy speaks for itself.

They're Crazy!

There are frozen EV's stranded across many areas of the country because batteries don't fare well in freezing cold temperatures. Plus, people are finding it difficult to get to charging stations due to road conditions. Not as much of a problem if you drive a gas vehicle because gas stations abound. And here democrats want us to be an EV country. Idiots!

Six Feet?

All of a sudden Dr. Anthony Fauci comes clean that their six feet of separation from one another during COVID wasn't based on science; he's not even sure where the idea came from. And here our federal government wanted us to follow this man without question.

Fauci should be arrested for a variety of causes including his attempt to hide where COVID originated. Fauci had close ties with China, something the Administration hid from us. Not surprising, it's how they roll.

LGBTQ Dance

The Biden administration, through the State Department, is allocating taxpayer dollars to sponsor a ballroom dancing initiative aimed at "uplifting transgender and gender-diverse" young individuals in Peru. The program, titled "Ballroom Saves Lives: Resiliency and Wellness in Peru," draws inspiration from a ballroom dancing tradition rooted in the Black and Latinx LGBTQIA community. They've lost it!!
