Her older brother was a musician and when she was little she talked her parents into buying her a drum set. Her brother kept trying to get her out of her shell because he thought she was a good singer, but she was very shy.
He eventually made it happen and Karen Carpenter shared her voice with the world. It did take a while for her to get out from behind her drum set so she’d sing lead while playing the drums. Everyone kept pushing for her to stand up front with a mike and she finally gave in and it paid off as fans went wild.
In my opinion her voice had some of the greatest texture of any singer in history. In a world of "me too" singers she was an original. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but even though young people during some of the talent shows sing a lot of songs from decades ago, Karen Carpenter is rarely duplicated. When someone has heard the song sung perfectly, there’s only one place left to go if you’re performing the song and that is down. They’re no longer just taking on the other contestants, they’re also taking on Karen and this isn’t a good spot to be in.
Karen’s brother Richard, tried so hard to keep her healthy but it was an eating disorder/disease that hardly anyone knew about that led to her death at the age of 32. I sure do miss her.
