The most difficult part about being a military leader is that it doesn't matter so much how smart you are or brave you are, but instead your ability to put other peoples' lives on the line not just your own. You can't waste time pondering the morality of the mission or hesitate to put personnel in danger even though you know the personal backgrounds of many of them. You can't differentiate that someone has a baby on the way or that someone just has a month left on his tour; they are to be put equally at risk.
Not everyone can be a leader in these conditions. Some people are brave enough to risk everything they have for their country, but it takes a certain mental toughness to be able to live with putting other people in danger and in some cases losing them because of decisions they had to make. Here's to all the military leaders who must make tough decisions and to all those in the military who volunteer to risk their lives for our great nation.
