The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868, as one of the Reconstruction Amendments. The amendment addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws and was proposed in response to issues related to former slaves following the American Civil War. The amendment was bitterly contested, particularly by the states of the defeated Confederacy. The bottom line is slaves didn’t come over here on their own free will, so they and their children, deserved citizenship. In other words, their parents weren’t here illegally so their children weren’t either and all of them deserved U.S citizenship.
With the above in mind, I believe it’s completely different than what’s going on with illegal immigration now. If parents are here illegally it doesn’t fit the intent of the 14th Amendment. Once again, I believe liberals are throwing out the intent of the framers of the U.S. Constitution and amendments in general. We’ve got to know where their minds were at the time to understand what they were attempting to convey in their laws. This is the way it’s supposed to be done.
In wrapping up, I repeat that I don’t think Trump would be successful at using an Executive Order in this case, but I believe he’s right about what the 14th Amendment means. Why in the world would we open citizenship in this way? Pretty much Canada and the United States are the only major countries around the world who do this. In Africa, only two out of the 54 countries offer Birthright Citizenship. I believe liberals are throwing out the Constitution once again to fit their agenda.
