Dolphins can swim up to speeds of around 35 mph which is why they can usually keep up with most boats. They love to be around boats for several reasons including the interaction with people and their love of using the boats wake to propel itself up in the air. They love to jump.
Dolphins have been studied by the military and have provided insight into how to increase the speed of propeller screws while at the same time limiting the noise (called cavitation), and enhance the effectiveness of sonar which is one of the most amazing features of a dolphin. They can hear noises from miles away and they make a clicking sound that when it hits an object it bounces back to them where they can figure out the shape, size, speed, and density of an object.
There are many beautiful things about dolphins as they protect other dolphins who are sick or have been injured and they’ve been known on several occasions to chase away sharks from humans. They have a unique connection to us. Of course, I’ve loved dolphins from as far back as I can remember since I watched that awesome television show from the 60’s called: “Flipper.” :)
