The first murder trial in the U.S. took place in 1800 in New York. A prominent man (Levi Weeks), was said to have killed his girlfriend but the evidence was almost all circumstantial. Fortunately for Levi his family had money so they hired the dream team of attorneys back then (i.e. Aaron Burr, Alexander Hamilton, and Henry Livingston). The judge all but told the jury there wasn't a case before they went back to deliberate so around fifteen minutes later, they came back with a verdict of "Innocent."
