Even though they had such a tremendous advantage especially since we had a militia not a real army, we were able to obtain our independence. I don't think a lot of people realize what a miracle it was. A bunch of blacksmiths, farmers, and fishermen, beating the greatest military in the world. This is why most of our founding fathers gave credit to God and built our Constitution around their beliefs. It was freedom of religion not freedom from religion. Their only intent was to not have a national religion like the Church of England at the time. Our first colleges were sponsored by the federal government and they were religious institutions. If the House and Senate then thought we shouldn't support religious organizations, why did they do it time and time again? The United States of America is a miracle and I thank God I was born here.
The French sometimes get a bad wrap when it comes to their military but the fact is, they were feared for centuries and they definitely had an amazing navy. And although I almost hate to say it, they played a huge role in us having a Republic. Not only did they help finance the war, they also sent ships which trapped the British in Yorktown. The thing is, Britain had a regular army because they had been collecting taxes to finance it plus they were involved in a lot of battles and wars as they sought out new territory. They had a seasoned army. Add to this their sea power and they had a huge upper hand in limiting supplies for our army.
