Henry Ford built a 31,000 sq. foot mansion in 1915 and in his usual self-made way, he built his own power plant to run his home. It ended up being so big, the electric company actually bought power from his facility that they could re-sell.
The only time Ford’s electric power plant lost power was when a massive flood hit and took out part of the power plant. What’s strange is that the power went out when Ford was on his death bed. So with all the advanced technology that he was a part of in his life, it just so happened he died in a cold room lit by candles. By the way, the name of the mansion was "Fair Lane" thus the name of one of their popular vehicles.
