Their biggest problem is that they don't understand the greatest leverage for influencing things around the world, to positively impact the livelihoods of U.S. citizens, and that is respect. We don't want to be well-liked because on a world stage that is weakness.
Take Obama for example, he was probably the worst I've ever seen with foreign policy. From day one in office, he worked towards getting other countries to like us. So how could he do this? There's only so many ways to make this happen. First of all, he did nothing to countries who didn't follow U.N. sanctions or G-8 rules. They walked all over him. Even though Russia was pushing us militarily in places like the Ukraine and Syria, he did nothing but offer a reset in the relationship.
The bottom line is that anyone who serves the government, which includes the military and politicians, all have a similar oath and that is to protect our rights to freedom and for protection. They can care about people around the world but it's U.S. first. If we lose leverage we can't help people in need outside of our country.
Then the question becomes how can we build and/or maintain respect? I'm not a big fan of China but I respect them and I respect them because of their economic and military leverage. That's it. I don't care about their leader whether he's likable or not, I care about the power they possess. With this in mind, any negotiations we have with them will take that leverage into consideration and then weigh it against ours. Trump is saying we have more leverage against China so he plays a bit of hardball but there are very few countries who can do this thus why they go around doing what they do without concern of repercussions.
Just like any negotiator around the world would do, Trump uses leverage to get what we need such as better trade deals. He's using leverage to get other countries to do their fair share of protecting human rights. Of course he's not going to be well liked. I don't want other countries to like him, I want them to fear him and the leverage the U.S. possesses. Many Democrats just don't get this and the mainstream media runs stories that suggests we're in worse shape because Trump is hated when in fact it's just the opposite. Surprise, surprise, they got it wrong again.
