A trip down memory lane. The band Lynard Skynard with such tremendous hits like "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" had just released their second album when their band was in a small plane crash (October 20, 1977). The plane ran out of fuel toward the end of the flight and crashed in a swamp in Gillsburg, Mississippi. The pilots attempted to land on a small air strip but the bottom of the plane clipped some trees and the aircraft went down.
Skynyrd singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray were killed instantly, while the other band members and road crew suffered terrible injuries.
Those who died never got to realize their second album called: "Street Survivors" went gold within a week. What a tragedy but also what a tremendous legacy of extraordinary music they gave us.
