It's one thing to support issues like breast cancer research by wearing pink, but celebrating and supporting a person's sexual orientation goes way beyond strange.
Plus, hockey is very much a sport with white players and a white fan base especially up north. Forcing other groups into the sport, such as African Americans, would be like forcing whites into the world of professional basketball when they might not be the best for the sport.
The NHL isn't actively filtering out anyone who wants to try out, they're just looking for the best. If a man is married to another man but has the ability to help a team win, there's no way they'd turn him down. It's always been about the money and the owners aren't going to let someone's gender, race, sexual orientation, etc., get in the way of giving them the best opportunity to win. This is called common sense and logic.
What's funny is that Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov, who refused to wear the gay pride jersey, had his jersey sellout online in just days after he made his stance. It seems like pretty much every time LGBTQ supporters boycott a business (like Chick-fil-A), the company ends up with record sales.
I'm sure their community thinks people are awful for supporting the businesses, but the truth is, most people just don't like what they're doing. They were attacking the CEO of Chick-fil-A in every way possible because he didn't believe in gay marriage but what they were doing would have had little effect on him, but they'd be hurting thousands of awesome employees if they were forced to shut down restaurants. Oh, and by the way, they lied about Chick-fil-A not hiring people based on their sexual orientation; the LGBTQ community had absolutely no proof but of course it didn't stop some of them from shouting it from the rooftops because many of them believe the end justifies the means. Just like the Democratic Party in general.
And to add insult to injury, the gay pride jersey looked ugly. See for yourself:
