It's confusing to a lot of people when they hear of a crime being investigated in London by Scotland Yard. The thing is, it's just a name not unlike when people talk about Wall Street which was named based on the street it was on. The entrance to a new British police station back in 1830, was on a street called Scotland Yard so it was easier just letting people know to go to Scotland Yard for help.
The police force grew so large that in 1890 they moved to another location but kept the name and called it New Scotland Yard. As of the 1960's they took over policing 32 districts around London, with the exception of the downtown city of London, which means they're responsible for protecting around 7.5 million citizens out of one extremely large police building instead of separate police districts like they do in places like New York City.
