I’m extremely concerned by what’s happening in our country with the pursuit of removing historical monuments such as the General Robert E. Lee statue in Charlottesville, Virginia and now it appears to be a national movement to take down anything (including street signs), with the name of a historical figure who might have owned slaves or fought for the Confederacy.
One of the problems with what’s happening is that quite frankly a small percentage of our society even understands U.S. history. I've seen countless interviews on the street where many Americans don't even know who Mike Pence is. Scary! With this in mind there are African Americans wanting to take down statues of historical figures they know absolutely nothing about.
With this in mind, they don’t know that General Lee was well respected by President Lincoln and was offered a job before and after the war. Lincoln knew that General Lee didn’t believe in slavery but he wouldn’t fight for the Union because he was a Virginian and he couldn’t get himself to fight against his own people. Lee never purchased slaves but inherited some which he freed at the same time he was fighting for the Confederate army. Just how many of those taking down his statue truly know his background?
My greatest concern is where will it end? I’ve heard several interviews by African Americans including Al Sharpton, and they mentioned that even statues of our Forefathers should come down because they owned slaves. This is absolutely outrageous. What would our history be without honoring those who fought for our independence and constructed a nation through the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights?
I can't help but wonder if the reason why Democrats are all over the talk shows pushing hard to immediately remove Confederate statues is due to them wanting to erase their racist role in history; basically getting rid of the evidence. Nancy Pelosi demanded that anything Confederate in D.C. be removed. She's been living and working there for over 30 years why is she speaking up now? She's acting like she's disgusted by these images but she's been living with them for decades. She's a terrible actress trying to act like she's livid over the issue yet has been complicit. I guess in order to be a politician you need to be shameless.
What I’d like to know, based on the criteria being used regarding tearing down statues, is why wouldn’t all of Senator Robert Byrd’s (D), monuments be removed (and there are a lot), from the state of West Virginia since he was once a Klu Klux Clan leader?
Senator Byrd did a tremendous amount of good for the citizens of his state but that shouldn’t matter according the criteria liberals are using since he was at one point an extreme racist. All monuments, plaques, and statues should come down and all buildings, bridges, highways, streets, etc., should have his name removed.
I think it would be ridiculous to do this and it’s why I believe we need to stop the madness and get some strict guidelines in place instead of allowing liberals to run rampant destroying our history. Please contact your representatives and tell them you want this madness to stop. Thanks.
