The Art of The Hunt

1/22/2020

Tim and Carl liked to hunt deer and when they heard that the wolf population in Montana had gotten out of control and a lot of farm/ranch animals were being killed, they thought it would be great to travel there for a long weekend and join in the hunt. Snow was on the ground so they dressed appropriately and they brought items to help draw in the wolves such as raw chicken and rabbit whistles (it makes a sound like a rabbit is in distress). They searched a large planned grid for two days and didn't see a single wolf. They used their bait. They used their whistles but found nothing. They never saw tracks.

When they checked back into the lodge they were staying at they encountered an old man in the bar area sitting alone. His name was Ben and he had lived in that area his entire life. They struck up a conversation with him and told him their dilemma and that they only had one more day to hunt. He asked them what all they'd been doing and he nodded his head. Ben said that all they needed to do was find a good spot, stay completely still, and wait. He said the wolves knew what they were doing, they'd seen it enough. Ben said sometimes when you want something, you have to quit proactively looking for it. He told them that the greatest of all hunters have something in common, they're patient. Their patience gets them the prize they're after.

It worked and they shot several wolves to help the local conservation efforts. Their experience and the words of wisdom from Ben, is not unlike our lives at times. Sometimes when we're chasing after something we miss the signs to find it because we're moving too fast. Sometimes, we just have to be still and patient to get what we want.
