Four observations that provided insight into the fact the earth was round: 1) If it was flat then they'd be able to see an entire ship coming towards them but instead they saw the top of the ships first (masts), before they saw the hull. 2) In watching an eclipse, they noticed that the earth was casting a shadow that was round. 3) When the telescope was invented it clearly showed the planets and moons as being round so there was no reason to believe the earth wasn't too. 4) Magellan (not Columbus), sailed all the way around the world going only west, thereby proving the world was round since he didn't fall of the map so to speak.
It took philosophers to mostly get on board with the "Earth is Round Theory" until around 700 A.D. even though Aristotle came up with the idea about a 1,000 years earlier. What’s wild is there’s a Bible verse (Isaiah 40:22), that was written around 2,500 years ago that told us the earth was round.
