The Impact of Television (Two Minutes to Read)

4/11/2012

Children are watching less television due to the various electronics they have and the numerous applications they get to use; but it’s another way children are getting bad messages so I addressed this important issue.

Almost every cartoon or sitcom shows that grownups in general, and especially parents and teachers, are un-cool and stupid while kids are smart and running the world. You might say that kids know it’s just make believe but if you don’t think it negatively affects our children, you’re wrong.

I admit that I think shows like
The Simpson’s can be funny at times but it clearly isn’t a good show for young people to watch. Cartoons on the Fox network are filled with about everything you wouldn’t want your child doing (i.e. arguing/yelling at parents, cheating, disrespecting elders, lying, etc.). They're also filled with sexual innuendos. Speaking of which, for years the FCC limited television content by only allowing shows that have adult content to be shown after 9:00 p.m. An example of how this has gone away is the TV show: How I Met Your Mother. There’s something sexual in nature said every other minute. It’s on Mondays and 8:00. Maybe it’s time to conduct an email campaign with the FCC about pushing back these types of shows to 9:00 or later again?

One major problem with have is there are so many channels now that it’s hard to police. If you knew what your children were watching I think you’d be amazed. Zig Ziglar said:
“We are what we are and where we are because of what has gone into our minds.” I think that many people have this problem of thinking things around them don’t have an effect on them when the truth is whatever we allow or put into our minds good or bad, will come out in one form or another.

So what can we do? There are many programs we can use on our TV that not only limits the amount of time your children are watching it, but also screens out profanity or shows with bad content. We can even choose specific channels you want to block.
One program that accomplishes what I’m talking about can be found on the internet:
www.familysafemedia.com. We’ll never be able to completely protect our children from bad input but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do everything we can to try because - Garbage in, garbage out!
