A common year has 365 days but a leap year (every four years on February 29), has 366 days. We do this to help synchronize our calendar year with the solar year, or the length of time it takes the earth to complete its orbit around the sun, which is about 365¼ days.
This of course helps normalize a variety of things including seasons around the globe. In other words, if we didn’t make the adjustment, after several decades, winter could begin in September in various places in the U.S. versus October. Basically, all the seasons would move backward in calendar time if we don’t incorporate the Leap Year.
