There are many things that amaze me as to what happened with our transition into WWI but none more so than the fact that since President Wilson wanted to remain neutral, Theodore Roosevelt put together pretty much his own army which was known as the "Preparedness Movement." At one point he had 150,000 young soldiers marching down 5th avenue in NYC sending a message to Wilson that they were ready to fight.
He had several training camps filled with volunteers ready to go to war. He was even highly supported by African American men who wanted to go to war as well as it was their first chance to show their patriotism. When we did finally declare war, we were well ahead of schedule in our preparation as we had hundreds of thousands of young men who didn't need boot camp and who could go directly into serving our country. It worked.
