When most people think of the deadliest plague they think of the bubonic plague (1347 A.D.), as it killed around 75 million people. They often don’t think about how horrendous the Spanish flu was (1918 A.D.), which infected 500 million people around the world and killed around 80 million people.
World War I had nine million casualties during its four years, but this killer flu took at least 25 million lives in one year. In the first year, nearly 20 million cases were reported in the United States alone, accounting for almost one million deaths.
The bottom line is it isn’t what we see that is the most dangerous, it’s what we don’t see.
