As they were cleaning up after 9/11 they pulled debris off an 8 ft. tall pear tree that was damaged and scorched but it appeared to still be alive, so they called a local nursery to remove it and see if they could save it. At that point everyone was looking for any signs of life whether animal, human, or in this case, a tree.
The tree survived, and they planted it at the memorial site along with over 300 other trees. This tree stands over 30 feet tall now and has been named: "The Survivor Tree." Got to love it!
