So when Reagan was 74 it was dangerous yet here's the Democratic lineup of the top runners at this point: Bernie Sanders (79), Joe Biden (78), and Elizabeth Warren (71). The double-standards in the Democratic Party are outrageous. Where are their scare tactics now about presidential candidates being so old?
President Reagan had the best comebacks I've ever heard but it was what he said during a debate with Walter Mondale that I'll never forget. Even the mainstream media kept playing it, even though it was a positive for Reagan, because it was so funny. It was a pivotal moment in his run for a second term because after his statement he even had some registered Democrats liking him.
What happened is that he was being challenged during a debate about his age by a reporter from The Baltimore Sun (the media attacked Republicans even back then), asking if he'd have the faculties and stamina necessary to do the job for a second term. Reagan replied with: "Not at all, and I want you to know that I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience."
The crowd went wild and what made it an even better historical moment is when the reporter made the hilarious statement of: "Mr. President, I'd like to head for the fence and try to catch that one before it goes over." Meaning Reagan had just hit a home run. I've never heard anything like this before in my life! He's still the greatest all-around President I've seen in my lifetime.
