The answer is they won’t do it because they use import taxes to manipulate the trade balance; therefore, we’re hundreds of billions of dollars in the hole in trade deficits. Notice what President Trump says when it comes to trade, he’d be happy with a fair deal, one where both sides tax at comparable rates yet countries like Canada are saying Trump’s being ridiculous; of course, they’d say this…they’ve been getting away with murder, economically speaking. The fact is we represent about 20% of Canada’s GDP while they represent around 1% of ours; with this in mind, if there was a trade deficit, we should be the country in the black based solely on trade volume. We’ve been their greatest sugar daddy so of course they get mad when we say we won’t play anymore.
The bottom line is if our trade partners aren’t willing to get rid of import taxes then they truly don’t want fair trade. They want a manipulation tool and it’s called tariffs. They’ve successfully rigged the system for their own countries which is entirely understandable it’s just that Trump is saying we’re not going to take it anymore and they’re not happy about it. As for me, I don’t care whether other countries like us, I just want them to respect us.
