In January 2017, a mentally disabled white man in Chicago, Illinois, was filmed being physically and verbally abused by four African Americans. The officially deemed "hate crime" was livestreamed on Facebook, making it a live streaming crime. The first of these offenders has been convicted and the judge didn't sentence her to prison time but instead banned her from social media over the next four years, prohibited her from contact with two of her co-defendants, and ordered her to do 200 hours of community service.
Could you imagine if the roles were reversed in this one and a hate crime against a mentally disabled African American was caught on video? First of all, there would've been race riots right after the crime occurred; of this there's no doubt. Leaders in the black community and their followers would've demonstrated in front of the court house and filled the court room as they sought justice. If one of the guilty party didn't get a prison term, rioting would occur again and of course everything would've been covered by the media 24/7.
Did you even hear about this person getting off the hook? It's this type of double-standard that will continue to cause a divide in race relations especially since African Americans don't see it. Some of them loved that she didn't get jail time and I find this very troubling.
