Veterans' Healthcare (One Minute to Read)

11/9/2014

I calculated how much it would costs to provide our veterans with healthcare benefits comparable to what seniors are getting now and it would be around $15 billion dollars. My calculations below include everything from office visits, surgeries, PTSD counseling, mental illness medications, etc. Many of our VA hospitals are a mess with limited services, inadequate medical equipment, long drive times to get to the hospital and long waiting periods.

All our vets would need is their own medical cards. Things would be smooth because the type of program needed is already in place as our federal government has been managing Medicare and Medicaid for decades.

Some of our politicians are posturing saying it’s tragic that our military personnel are being treated the way they are but it’s their fault with not overseeing the VA effectively and not providing them with the funding necessary. They’re increasing the budget but more VA hospitals and personnel aren’t the answer as we’d be throwing good money after bad.

If we went with a card program like Medicare participants have our vets wouldn’t need to travel long distance to VA locations as they could see the doctors of their choice who are closer to home for them.

Emergency room visits wouldn’t be an issue and they could finally have more physical therapy visits. For example travelling two hours to a VA hospital for therapy isn’t realistic so our veterans don’t go as often as they should or possibly not at all.

This idea isn’t a band aid approach it’s a long-term solution that’s quick and fairly easy to implement. It’s truly a win-win with our veterans getting the medical services they deserve. As it is now they’re mostly forgotten. They go into a system that pretty much none of us know about. It’s human nature to not get involved in things until it affects us on a personal level so I hope this article inspired you enough to contact your representatives and push this idea. All you’d have to do is go to their websites and copy and paste this article. Don’t you think the people who risked their lives for our country have earned our support?
