The band was called Queen and the song was: Bohemian Rhapsody. The song which reached number one around the world, was officially released the next year on Queen's fourth album called: A Night at the Opera, which was the one that really launched their success.
Band members didn't even know what the song would sound like until near the end of production nor did they know the name of the song, they just called it Freddie's project, because Freddie had the musicians playing different sound tracks in the studio at different times and then he mixed them all together like a maestro. The operatic blend into a rock song confused some of the band members upfront but they trusted that Freddie knew what he was doing and of course they were right. He was a musical genius.
