Has anyone else noticed that the number one problem we face as a nation is no longer part of political candidates campaign promises and that is the critical need to create a surplus budget so we can pay down our debt? Neither Party wants to address the issue because the biggest impact they can make is to slash the budget which one way or another will impact special interests of various groups. There are countless research studies (Pork Projects), that representatives have gotten for their districts which are extremely wasteful with the exception of garnering votes for them.
It's time the dirty work gets done. Do you think President Jefferson didn't get his hands dirty when he told states they needed to kick in tax revenues for infrastructure? We know how critical it is now, but during those times very few colonists saw any benefit for money to be spent outside of their world. The ultimate President to get his hands dirty was President Lincoln and he lost his life for it.
